What's included in our concrete removal service

Concrete removal is one of those jobs that looks simple but gets expensive fast if the crew isn't efficient with equipment and logistics. Here's exactly what we do on every removal job:

  • Sawcutting. Before any demolition, we sawcut clean, straight edges at the boundary of the removal area. This protects adjacent concrete, landscaping, and structures from collateral damage. We use diamond-blade walk-behind saws for precision cuts up to 6 inches deep.
  • Demolition. Depending on slab thickness and reinforcement, we use electric jackhammers for small areas and tight access, skid-steer mounted hydraulic breakers for larger slabs, and excavator-mounted hammers for commercial-scale demo. Every method is matched to the job to minimize time, noise, and impact on your property.
  • Loading and haul-off. Broken concrete is loaded into dump trucks with a skid-steer or mini excavator. We size the equipment to your site access, if we can get a bobcat through a side gate, we use a bobcat. If not, we wheelbarrow. Haul-off is included in every quote.
  • Recycling. Whenever possible, we deliver demolished concrete to a local recycling facility where it's crushed and reused as road base and aggregate. Recycling keeps concrete out of the landfill and reduces the environmental impact of your project.
  • Base prep (optional or bundled). If you're pouring new concrete, we compact the subgrade, add 4 to 6 inches of Class 2 aggregate base, and mechanically compact to 95% density. This step is included in all removal-and-replace quotes and available as an add-on for standalone removal.

Common removal projects in Redding

We remove concrete from all types of residential and light commercial properties. Here are the most common projects we handle in the Redding area:

  • Driveway removal and replacement. The most common project we do. Redding's heat and clay soils cause driveways to crack and settle faster than in milder climates. We tear out the old slab, fix the base, and pour a new driveway engineered for our conditions. See our driveway page for specs and pricing on the new pour.
  • Patio demolition. Removing old patios for remodels, expansions, or replacement with stamped or decorative concrete. We protect landscaping, pools, and house siding during demo.
  • Sidewalk panel replacement. Removing and replacing individual sidewalk panels damaged by tree roots, settlement, or age. We sawcut clean edges on both sides of the damaged panel and replace just that section.
  • Pool deck removal. Taking out old, cracked, or UV-damaged pool decks before installing new slip-resistant surfaces. We work carefully around pool coping and equipment pads.
  • Foundation and slab removal. Removing old foundations, garage slabs, and shed pads for new construction or site clearing. These often involve rebar, wire mesh, and thicker concrete that requires heavier equipment.

Our 4-step removal process

01

On-site estimate

We measure the removal area, check thickness and reinforcement, assess equipment access, and give you a written quote for removal only or removal plus replacement. Same-day quotes on most jobs.

02

Sawcut & protect

Diamond-blade sawcuts create clean boundaries. We lay plywood over landscaping and protect adjacent surfaces. Utilities are marked before any breaking begins.

03

Demo & load

Jackhammer or machine breaker demolishes the slab. Skid-steer loads broken concrete into dump trucks. For tight-access backyards, we wheelbarrow to the truck at the street.

04

Haul-off & prep

Trucks deliver debris to the recycler. If you're pouring new, we compact the subgrade, add and compact aggregate base, and leave the site ready for forms and rebar.

Removal pricing guide

Concrete removal pricing depends primarily on slab thickness, reinforcement, area, and equipment access. Here's what to expect in the Redding market:

Slab typeThicknessReinforcementEst. cost / sq ft
Standard patio / walkway3–4"None or mesh$2–$3
Standard driveway4"Fiber or mesh$2.50–$4
Heavy-duty driveway5–6"Rebar grid$4–$6
Foundation / garage slab4–6"Rebar + stem walls$5–$7
Commercial slab6–8"Heavy rebar$5–$8

Pricing includes sawcutting, demolition, loading, haul-off, and recycling. Base prep for new pour is additional unless bundled with a replacement quote. Estimates are always free.

Standalone removal vs. bundled with replacement

We offer concrete removal as both a standalone service and as part of a complete removal-and-replace package. Here's how they compare:

  1. Standalone removal is the right choice when you're working with another contractor on the new pour, converting concrete to landscaping, clearing a site for a different use, or just need old concrete gone. We remove, haul, and leave a clean site.
  2. Bundled removal + replacement saves you money and coordination headaches. When we handle both removal and the new pour, the crew transitions seamlessly from demo to base prep to forming. You get one quote, one schedule, one point of contact, and typically 10 to 15% less than hiring removal and pouring separately.
  3. Partial removal + repair is an option when only part of the slab has failed. We sawcut and remove just the damaged section, prep the base, and pour a matching replacement panel. This is common for sidewalks with tree root damage and driveways with localized settlement.

Concrete recycling in Redding

We believe in keeping concrete out of the landfill whenever possible. Here's how our recycling process works:

  • Demolished concrete is loaded and transported to a local recycling facility in the Redding area.
  • At the facility, concrete is crushed, rebar and wire mesh are magnetically separated, and the crushed material is screened to size.
  • Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is used as road base, fill material, and drainage rock, replacing virgin quarry materials.
  • On some projects, we can crush on-site and use the recycled material as base for the new pour, reducing both haul-off and import costs.

Not all concrete can be recycled. Slabs with hazardous coatings, asbestos-containing materials, or heavy contamination must be disposed of at an approved facility. We identify these situations during the estimate and factor proper disposal into the quote.

Equipment and access considerations

One of the biggest variables in removal cost is how we access the work area. Here's what we bring and how access affects pricing:

  • Full equipment access (bobcat and dump truck can reach the slab): Most efficient, lowest cost. Common for front driveways and open side yards.
  • Limited equipment access (bobcat fits through a gate but truck stays at the street): Moderate cost increase. We bobcat debris to the truck. Common for backyard patios accessible through a side gate.
  • Hand-carry access (no equipment can reach the slab): Highest cost. Demolition is done with electric jackhammers and debris is wheelbarrowed to the truck. Common for fenced backyards with narrow gates and interior courtyards.

During the estimate we assess access, recommend the best approach, and quote accordingly. There are no access surprises on demo day.

Concrete Removal FAQs

How much does concrete removal cost in Redding?

Standard concrete removal in Redding runs $2 to $5 per square foot for a typical 4-inch residential slab including sawcutting, demolition, loading, and haul-off to a local recycler. Thicker slabs (5 to 6 inches with rebar) cost $4 to $7 per square foot. A typical 600 square foot driveway removal runs $1,200 to $3,000. Difficult access, rebar-heavy slabs, or slabs attached to structures at the higher end.

How long does concrete removal take?

Most residential concrete removal jobs take 1 day. A standard driveway or patio can be sawcut, demolished, loaded, and hauled off in 4 to 8 hours depending on size and thickness. Larger projects like commercial slabs or multiple areas may take 2 to 3 days. We schedule removal and new pour back-to-back so your property isn't torn up longer than necessary.

Do you haul away the old concrete?

Yes. Haul-off is included in every removal quote. We load demolished concrete into dump trucks and deliver it to a local concrete recycler when possible. Recycled concrete is crushed and used as road base and aggregate, keeping it out of the landfill. If the concrete contains hazardous coatings or materials, we arrange proper disposal.

Can you remove just part of a concrete slab?

Yes. Partial removal is one of our most common requests. We sawcut a clean, straight line at the boundary of the removal area, demolish and remove only the damaged or unwanted section, and leave a clean edge for patching or new concrete. This is common for panel replacement on driveways and sidewalks, pool deck modifications, and adding planting beds in existing patios.

Do you prep the base for a new pour after removal?

Yes, and we recommend it. After removal we can compact the subgrade, add and compact Class 2 aggregate base, and leave the site ready for a new pour. Base prep is included in all bundled removal-and-replace quotes. For standalone removal jobs, base prep is optional and quoted separately.
